This week’s poll addresses the impact of the current recession on consumer behavior and the willingness of citizens to support state services during an extended recession. Don and Perry will discuss the responses from the radio audience that participated in the poll and what should be expected from local and state government as we work our way through the Great Recession.
The decline in stock and real estate markets has affected everyone. We have shifted from a consumption society to a conservation society. Even the very affluent have changed their spending patterns from the newest to slightly used items to save money.
Every level of government is struggling to deal with revenue shortages. States are trying creative ways to raise revenue and avoid reductions in both services and staffing. As citizens, we will all be facing requests for higher taxes. We are going to be tested in our commitments to our communities and states about our level of support for many services that we have taken for granted.
