We will review what San Francisco Fed President Janet L. Yellen has to say about how things are shaping up. The big issue is how strong the upturn will be. With such enormous reservoirs of slack in the form of high unemployment and idle productive capacity, we need a strong rebound to put unemployed people back to work and get underutilized factories, offices, and stores humming again.

We are out of gold. Global gold production is in terminal decline despite record prices and Herculean efforts by mining companies to discover fresh sources of ore in remote spots, according to the world's top producer.

 While Massachusetts recipients of federal stimulus money collectively report 12,374 jobs saved or created, a Globe review shows that number is wildly exaggerated. Organizations that received stimulus money miscounted jobs, filed erroneous figures, or claimed jobs for work that has not yet started. Is the stimulus really creating or saving any jobs at all.
 
Dropping tax revenue, rising unemployment and yawning budget gaps are wreaking havoc in states from Arizona to Wisconsin, a new report shows. What can they do to turn things around and how are we doing out here in the North West.
 
Despite being in “bunker mode,” in which virtually all non-essential spending has been trimmed or eliminated, consumers have continued to buy shoes by the box loads. Tune in to find out “whats up with that”.
